Janet Louise Tuft Garvin, MSW, was the oldest child of Dr. Louis Tuft and Carlyn Manasses Tuft, and sister of Betsy A. Tuft, MSW, and Harry M. Tuft. Janet grew up with her family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a young girl Janet developed a love for travel and was able to travel throughout Europe and lead a Youth Hostel group while riding her Raleigh 3-Speed bicycle.
Janet spent her first two years of college at Penn State and then the next few years at Temple University. She then went to Chicago in 1956 for her Master’s degree in Social Work at the University of Illinois in Chicago. That same year Janet was introduced to Charles by mutual friends Lillie Lynem and Elaine Finnegan while they were in the Social Work school in a group work course.
Janet Garvin, and Charles Garvin, Ph.D., were married in 1957 and have enjoyed 64 years of marriage as Janet would say, “a long, long time”. Janet and Charles, moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1965 when Charles accepted a position at the University of Michigan School of Social Work.
Janet’s children are David Garvin, MSW, Amy Garvin-Liddell, MSW, Tony Garvin. She is the mother-in-Law of Nancy Garvin, Charlie Liddell, and Debra Garvin. Janet is the grandmother of Caitlin (Garvin) Opfermann, Shane Garvin, and Jake Liddell. Her great grandchildren include: Jacob Opfermann, Addie Garvin, and soon to be born, Caiden Opfermann. Janet is the Aunt of Michael Karlins, Russell Karlins, Michelle Karlins, Claire Tuft and Bryna Tuft.
Janet and Charles shared a love of travel and time with family. Initially, they lived in Chicago and then in two consecutive beautiful homes in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 1971 the family lived for a year in London, England during a sabbatical year for Charles. During this time, they enjoyed travel including: Switzerland, Italy, Yugoslavia, Israel, Turkey, and Greece, just to name a few. Janet and Charles shared many vacations around the globe and by sea. They were fond of going on elaborate cruises to various parts of the world and continued these trips well after her stroke in 2000. Charles and Janet enjoyed an Alaskan cruise for their 50th Anniversary and were joined by their children and many members of their children’s families.
Over the course of her social work career, Janet held a number of social work positions beginning with the Jewish Community Center in Chicago and subsequently at the Hillel Foundation in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She then took a job at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Allen Park, Michigan. Later, she worked for the Michigan Department of Social Services in the Adult Protective Services Department in Washtenaw County. Her final employment was with Foote Hospital in Jackson, Michigan until a major stroke in 2000.
The burial service will be private and held at Arborcrest Memorial Gardens. However, all friends and family are invited to attend a Zoom Memorial Service on Friday, April 16, 2021 at 3:00 pm EST.
